From MC Heavyweights to Pop Newcomers: ENVY Advertising’s Music Video Round-Up

Stormzy, Example, Snakehips, Maribou State, and Vybz Kartel feature in ENVY Advertising’s retrospective highlights.

Music videos continue to make their mark on culture – with 2019 already throwing up showstoppers and thought-provoking gems such as The Chemical Brothers’ ‘Gotta Keep On’, A$AP Rocky’s ‘Kids Turned Out Fine’, and The Specials’ ‘Vote For Me’. ENVY Advertising takes the opportunity to look back at its most memorable music video highlights – from MC heavyweights to electro dream-teams, to dancehall giants and pop newcomers…

AMA – Slip
Relive your high-school nostalgia in pastel-hued perfection with AMA’s recent video, ‘Slip’. Shot by Francis Wallis, the fun and highly-stylised film flawlessly complements the 18-year-old London songstress’ upbeat R&B tunes. Through seamless post, three different AMAs simultaneously share a screen.

Snakehips – Cruzin’ (Stay Home Tapes – Act 1) ft. St Rulez
It’s not quite summer yet but for three minutes you can be transported to the mesmerising, sunset-soaked world of Snakehips’ ‘Cruzin’. For the majority of the video, we stroll alongside a seemingly wholesome middle-aged woman in an all-lilac get-up and her beloved pooch. But those who watch to the end will be treated to an unexpected twist…

Maribou State – Nervous Tics
Maribou State’s dreamy and disorientating music video bewitchingly plays with our perspective of time and space. Seamless visual effects create fluid mirror-image illusions, while the rich grade gives each scene a distinct aesthetic and mood – from the technicolour dancefloor to cold deep greens of the therapy room and vibrant midnight blues of the snooker hall.

Vybz Kartel – Real Bad Gal
Jamaica’s colourful music community is rendered in all its beauty and harsh realities by director Ivar Wigan, who spent two years forming relationships with its hustlers and dancers. His music video for Vybz Kartel contrasts lush shots of Jamaica’s nature against the artificial hues of the vibrant clothing and interiors – switching between grainy, cinematic footage and candid night-time shots.
